Eligibility

Everything required to open a Kovo account, everything that is not required, and what happens after you apply. The bar is deliberately low, because the people who need credit history most are usually the ones conventional requirements exclude.

What you need

RequirementDetail
Age18 or older — 19 in Alabama and Nebraska
ResidenceA US residential address. All 50 states and Washington D.C., no exclusions
Taxpayer numberAn SSN or an ITIN. An ITIN is accepted on its own
Bank accountA US bank account, used for autopay
ContactAn email address and a US mobile number

If you hold an ITIN rather than an SSN, nothing about the process changes. Our ITIN guide covers that route in full.

What you do not need

  • No minimum credit score. There is no score floor. A thin file, or no file at all, is expected here.
  • No credit inquiry. Applying leaves no hard inquiry and cannot lower the score you are trying to raise.
  • No security deposit. Nothing is locked up front, unlike a secured card.
  • No income minimum, no employment verification. No pay stubs, no salary threshold, no call to your employer.
  • No existing US credit history. First-time borrowers and new arrivals open accounts here every day.

What happens after you apply

The check takes about a minute. We verify your identity against the details you provide — this is an identity and income verification, not a credit pull.

If you are approved you choose your amount and term, see the exact monthly payment, and sign. Autopay is set up at the same time. Your first payment is reported to all four bureaus in the following cycle, and typically appears on your file 30 to 45 days later.

Meeting the requirements is not approval

Satisfying everything on this page does not guarantee approval. All applications are subject to identity verification and internal review. What we can promise is that no stage of that review involves a hard credit inquiry, so an unsuccessful application cannot cost you points.

If you are declined, here is why

Almost every decline on this product is an identity verification problem rather than a judgement about your creditworthiness — there is no score to judge. Each of these is fixable, and most people who are declined once are approved on a second attempt after correcting the cause.

What went wrongHow commonWhat fixes it
Name spelled differently than on your bank or IDMost commonUse the exact spelling on your government ID, including middle names and hyphens
Address does not match records held about youCommonUse the address your bank has. A recent move takes weeks to propagate
Taxpayer number entered incorrectlyCommonCheck digit by digit. An ITIN begins with 9 and has nine digits
Date of birth mismatchOccasionalCheck the format the form expects — month and day are easy to transpose
Bank account cannot be verifiedOccasionalUse a checking account in your own name. Prepaid cards and joint accounts often fail
Thin file with no verifiable footprintLess commonOpen a bank account first and let it settle for a month or two

A decline here leaves no mark. There is no credit inquiry at any stage, so an unsuccessful application cannot lower your score and does not appear on your report. You can correct the detail and try again.

These are Credit Builder requirements, not loan requirements

The two products on this site have different criteria and different decision-makers. People often assume clearing one means clearing the other, and it does not.

Credit BuilderPartner loans
Who decidesKovoThe lender
Minimum credit scoreNoneTypically 620, varies by lender
Credit inquiryNone at any stageSoft to check, hard to apply
Income verificationIdentity and income based, no pay stubsUsually required
Employment checkNoOften
Debt-to-income testedNoYes, and frequently decisive
SSN or ITINEitherMost lenders require an SSN
AvailabilityAll 50 states + D.C.Varies by lender and state
If declinedNo mark on your fileA hard pull may already have happened

So a decline on one says almost nothing about the other. If you are here because a lender turned you down, that is precisely the situation this product exists for. If you want to check the loan side too, doing so uses a soft pull and costs nothing.

When we are the wrong answer

Eligibility is not the same as suitability. Some people qualify easily and should still choose something else.

The check takes about a minute and runs no credit inquiry. Nothing is signed until you choose an amount and a term.
