What is Innovis? The fourth credit bureau, explained
Almost every article about credit says there are three bureaus. There are four. The fourth is a legitimate nationwide agency governed by the same federal law, it holds a file on most American adults, and it is the one people forget to check or freeze — largely because it never advertises.
Innovis is the credit reporting division of CBC Companies, a privately held business based in Columbus, Ohio. It has operated since 1970 and is generally described as the fourth largest consumer credit reporting agency in the United States, behind Experian, TransUnion and Equifax.
It does the same fundamental job as the big three: it maintains consumer files built from data supplied by lenders, and sells reports to approved parties. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau lists it as a nationwide consumer reporting company, which means the Fair Credit Reporting Act applies to it in full — your right to a free annual report, your right to dispute errors and your right to freeze the file all hold here.
What makes it invisible is a business decision rather than a legal distinction. Innovis does not run consumer-facing marketing, does not sell monitoring subscriptions, and is not part of annualcreditreport.com — the site the other three are legally required to fund. So a consumer who does everything right at the big three can still have a fourth file they have never seen.
Which credit builders actually reach all four
This is the practical consequence. If a lender pulls Innovis and your credit-building account was never reported there, the history you have been paying for is simply not in the file they are reading.

What Innovis collects, and where it comes from
The file is assembled the same way the others are — from furnishers reporting your accounts — but the mix of what reaches it differs in a few notable ways.
- Lender-reported accounts
- The core of the file: loans, cards and other credit accounts supplied by lenders who choose to furnish data to Innovis as well as the big three.
- Mortgage history
- Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac directed partner organisations to report mortgage payments to Innovis from 2001, which is a large part of why the file exists on so many adults.
- Alternative payment data
- Reporting has been described as sometimes reaching further than the big three into rent, utilities, mobile phone and similar recurring obligations.
- Identity and fraud verification
- A significant part of the business is confirming that a person is who they claim to be, which is why lenders may pull it for screening rather than for scoring.
- Address and household data
- Used by data brokers to confirm addresses, employment and household relationships — which is why privacy-minded consumers freeze it alongside the big three.
- What it does not do
- It does not market to consumers, does not sell you a monitoring subscription, and does not participate in annualcreditreport.com.
Three things worth doing, none of which cost anything
All three are rights you already hold under federal law. Details below are as published by Innovis and the CFPB in August 2026 — confirm on their site before acting, since contact routes change.
Request your free report
You are entitled to one free report every 12 months, and it must be supplied within 15 days of your request. Requesting your own report is a soft pull and cannot lower your score.
Place a security freeze
Free, and it blocks new creditors from pulling the file. You receive a confirmation letter containing a 10-digit PIN, which is what you use to lift the freeze later — keep it somewhere you will find it.
Opt out of prescreened offers
One request covers all four bureaus at once, for five years or permanently. This stops the pre-approved credit offers that arrive in the post and are a common route to mail-theft fraud.
A freeze is free and does not affect your score. If you have already frozen Experian, Equifax and TransUnion, this is the one most people miss — and an unfrozen fourth file undermines the other three.
Why this page exists on a credit builder’s website
We have an obvious motive for telling you about Innovis, so here it is stated rather than implied.
Among widely used credit builders, Kovo currently reports to all four. That is a real differentiator and it is the reason we wrote this page — treat the argument on its merits, not on our say-so.
Self and CreditStrong return your money at maturity and we do not. Compare all four builders before deciding; coverage is one factor among several.
If you take one thing from this page, freeze the file. It costs nothing, protects you more than any product we sell, and we would rather you did that than bought anything.
